The wolf in my dog

The last couple of days I discovered more and more wolf traits in Anna.
A lot of dog owners wouldn’t appreciate wolf character traits in their dogs, but I do.

wolf and golden retriever

The howling, the growling, eating habits, playing habits…

Let me start with this situation: Anna was chewing her bone and while I tried her new harness on, I could see her flews moving up but there was no growl. Curiously I moved my hand closer to her bone, a short little growl followed, and before I knew it, she bit me in the finger. I guess I was pretty surprised at that, as Nina (my former Golden Retriever) had never done this but it’s only natural behavior.
So I started taming my little wolf by taking her bone away and giving it back to her, and taking it away again and giving it back. She didn’t try to bite or growl again. We practice this every day now.

On our walks, Anna found out that she loves horse manure. She loves to use her sharp teeth when playing, she is very communicative.
Today I thought I’d do her the favor and buy some green tripe (rumen).
Pansen, Tripe, Blättermagen, rumen
Green tripe is supposed to…
“(…) provide completely natural digestive enzymes to the dog but also vitamins, fatty acids and amino acids. All dogs need omega 3’s and omega 6’s in their diet – especially to maintain healthy skin and coat.  The vitamins and amino acids are in large part what gives your dog energy and spunk – green tripe has those to spare.  Green tripe is an excellent source of probiotics due to the large numbers of helpful microorganisms contained within the digestive tract.  Naturally occurring organisms are always preferable to man-made mixtures and nothing can be more natural than having them go straight from the source to the dog.”

But ooh myy gooood, the smell! I was told to give her as much as she likes because if she overeats, she will vomit it out anyway and then eat it up again slowly. Wolves do that too. Sounds delicious, huh?
So I offered her 500g of green tribe… And as if it was chocolate, Anna swallowed it ALL down in one go. And of course she didn’t vomit it out and this really got me to worry. Now she is just lying there curled up in a big ball with about 700g of food inside of her. I hope she won’t explode.
One thing is for sure, I will ration the amounts of tripe from now on!
Interestingly I believe, I smell like tripe now! I can’t get that smell out of my nose.

Just an update on the kennel training as well: Since I placed the kennel in the middle of the living room, Anna is calm and quiet. She basically sleeps through the night without complaining and enjoys being near me in the evenings.

And here a few photos of the last days:

Video of Anna week 8-10

This video shows the preparations before we picked up Anna and her first two weeks at home.

Autumn Days

I tried something else. I moved the kennel to Anna’s favourite spot in the living room. Now this doesn’t look very pretty BUT she has stopped crying altogether. She seems to feel very comfortable and ideally I also have the TV running for her and she falls asleep within minutes. The kennel won’t stay here forever but for now it works and that’s a real success.
Anna has also grown a lot. She gains an average of 100g per day and I can tell the difference when I pick her up to take her outside. Her original purple collar is too small and the harness we bought, is now also getting too small.

Anna Collage Kennel asleep

Today we went for a big 1.5 hour walk on the 10m leash past and over millions of colourful leaves. Anna LOVES leaves! And she loves to get really muddy, so she had to get a bath twice today. Anna also LOVES bath time – NOT. But she is getting more patient with it. She follows very well and listens to “come” or the whistle and “sit” like she has never done anything else.
Oh and did I mention? When we race, she is now FASTER than me!!!

Progress: Dealing with Separation Anxiety a little different

As mentioned in the the last post, there have been a few problems with Anna. Step by step we are making progress.
The mites that caused red spots and itchiness fortunately disappeared completely.
The vaginitis is still being treated with the calendula solution but we don’t expect any change for at least a week.
The peeing in the house has stopped for four days, due to me restricting her from moving freely in the house for now.

Golden Retriever Puppy Welpe Anna

Sleeping in the kennel… Well!!! Here we are making baby steps. Anna seems to be a little different, maybe a little more sensitive, than other dogs. Instead of ignoring her completely, it helped to calm her down by being near her crate or talking to her nicely when she cried. This is against most training advice but for us it works this way. Also the TV helps to calm her down a lot. Now, a week later, the severe tantrums have stopped, so that I can leave the room when she is in the kennel. She will still scream for a while and depending on severity I either ignore it or, when she pushes herself up too much, go back in the room and calm her down a little. Eventually she settles and accepts the situation. The more I keep her busy with walks, playing and training (ideally for 3 hours at a time) the easier she accepts being in the kennel. After a 3-4 hour activity she will actually accept being in the kennel and fall asleep without any crying at all.
At night she won’t sleep through and cry every few hours. Last night for example I had her outside at around 23:00 and at 02:00 she woke me up the first time. I took her outside, but all she did was lay down on the grass. At 04:15 she woke me up again, this time she did go to toilet and at 05:00 she woke me up again but I refused and ignored her whining. She fell back asleep after about 8min of crying. Finally at 6:30 she cried again and I took her out to toilet and gave her breakfast. Then we went for a walk around the neighborhood and back at home in the kennel, she cried for about 10-15min before she finally gave up and fell back asleep.
Interestingly we tried to leave her by herself in the car today and she had no problem with being left alone at all. After she saw us disappear in the shops, she dropped back down to the floor and fell asleep. No drama.
For tonight I’m trying something new: I moved her kennel outside on the terrace as I think that maybe it’s too warm for her to sleep inside the house.

Apart from the little dramas we are enjoying our time thoroughly and discover new things every day. The garden is an exciting place with birds to chase, grass and plants to eat, sand to dig in or the many autumn leaves being blown around by the wind.

Golden Retriever Welpe Puppy Anna Playing

On walks Anna is an eager runner with her 9 weeks of age. When we race, she is able to keep up with me already and we go and check out the lake every now and then to play in the water with feet and paws. She won’t go in all the way yet.
My little girl has gained a kilo within a week and is clearly getting heavier and taller each day.

Sickies and Tantrums

The day after we picked up Anna, I saw some little red spots around her lady bits. I thought maybe they were just a little rash, so I carefully cleaned her with warm water and put some Penaten creme on the red and slightly swollen spots. The next day the spots looked less red and I assumed the creme was helping. Another day later, I wanted to clean her again and realized that there is a green-yellow discharge coming out of her.
I immediately called the vet and took Anna down the same day. The vet said the discharge is caused by a vaginitis. This is common in female dogs and it’s supposed to disappear with the first heat. Since she is only 8 weeks old, waiting until her first heat seems to be awfully long but the vet said, there is nothing much she can do. She gave her an antibiotic injection just in case.
The red spots are not actually just a rash but caused by (autumn) mites! Adult dogs usually don’t react to these mites but since Anna’s skin is still very thin, it get’s very itchy and uncomfortable. The vet gave us a shampoo to get rid of parasites and a spray to calm down the itching.
Back at home I did some research on natural remedies to help stop the vaginitis and found that calendula (marigold) tincture has helped other dogs to heal the infection.
Mum and I thoroughly washed her with the shampoo and warm water in a little bathing tub the same night.

Golden Retriever Puppy Bath Sick

The next day I got the calendula tincture from the chemist. We mixed 20 drops in 150ml water (boil and let cool down first) and flushed out her private bits carefully. There is also some alcohol in the tincture which should help to disinfect any irritated areas. Finally some Penaten Creme and we are done.

Not that being sick is worrying enough, Anna has started to wee on the carpet quite frequently now. While I’m making sure she get’s out often enough (once every hour/2 hours) and she also does wee outside and I reward her for it, we walk back inside the house and within a minute, she wees again. Yesterday she even weed on her blanket, which shocked me quite a bit.
Another time she weed outside, then weed on the carpet 5min later and within 10 seconds did another wee a meter away from the other wee.
I’m not sure whether this toilet problem is caused by her infection or whether I did something wrong.
Unfortunately I had to decide that she’ll only be allowed inside the crate when in the house until she is housebroken. This is a huge problem as she has extreme separation anxiety and throws tantrums inside her crate that won’t stop! The maximum time I tried to lock her in there with me being in the room were four hours and she didn’t stop screaming once. Yesterday, after a long day out, I had her in the crate for an hour (the crying did not stop) then outside in the garden for 15min and back inside for an hour. Again the crying did not stop. She will only stop crying when we are nearby her crate. She will not settle at all if we are out of her sight.
Last night she worked herself up once again that when we went outside, she simply dropped to the floor and lay flat in the grass, not moving. She had to cool herself down for quite a while but even then she didn’t like to walk through the garden with me. I had to put her on her leash and animate her to follow me but she wouldn’t go to the toilet. When I had her back in the crate, she worked herself up again so much, that when I came back 15min later, she was panting like crazy (while whining still) and I noticed the right side of her face was swollen up a lot. She must have hurt herself in the crate badly.

Golden Retriever puppy kennel separation anxiety

About her crate: I did everything I was told: I reduced the space in her crate so she can’t run around in it anymore, I put a clock inside, my socks, a kong toy, I tried to play with her in and around her crate etc. It’s not that she doesn’t like the crate itself, she only panics once I move away more than a meter.

I have a strong schedule for today: I’ll take her outside and do some whistle training, maybe try some retrieving. Then I’ll walk her along the forest a few hundred meters. Once she is tired, I’ll bring her back, clean her with calendula and finally bring her back to her crate. When she is in there, for today, I will stay in the room.
I hope there will be some improvement by tonight; I hope she will accept being in the crate when I’m in the room without throwing tantrums anymore.

Anna going Metropolitan

Yesterday Anna was allowed to come with me to the dentist. It was her first car ride since we picked her up and she was a little scared of the big thing on four wheels but soon settled once we left. Upon arrival she met “Frida”, a yellow labrador, and 4 women who work at the dentist and dropped all their work for a few minutes just to give Anna some attention and cuddles.

At the office I learnt her to “stay on the blanket” and considering that she has never heard of that before and hasn’t really learnt any commands too well yet, she picked it up surprisingly well. I basically didn’t say anything but “go on your blanket” in a nice tone and repeated bringing her back until she gave up. After 5min she stayed on the blanket and fell asleep. During a break I took her out and we watched the traffic for about 10min. Trams, cars, trucks, buses, bicycles and people went past, while Anna was nervously watching them. All the excitement made her so tired that she fell asleep within seconds when I took her back to the office.

Golden Retriever puppy sleeping in the office

Back at home, I also kept learning her to stay on her blanket and settle there.

This morning Anna did three retrieves for me! Yayyy! I threw a ball and she delivered it back to my hand three times.
We went to Berlin for the day and decided to take Anna with us. Right in the city centre I carried her along a busy road and when we turned left into a less busy street, I let her walk by herself. Along the Spree river we sat down and watched the boats go by. In the distance the trains rushed by and there were noises from construction zones everywhere. Sitting and watching things helps her settle quite quickly. When we walked under a bridge with groups of people, she was hesitant and a little anxious but I made her sit and watch them. Eventually we walked through the crowd and survived it – success!

Schiffbauerdamm Berlin

Back at the car, Anna fell asleep within seconds. She loves being in the car now. We got her a “seat-belt” for dogs which is a harness that can be clicked in the seat-belt fastener.

Dog Harness Seat Belt Hunde-Sitzgurt
Our last stop for today was an outdoor shopping village near Berlin. Here we met a lot of other people, children and two grown up Golden Retrievers. Anna showed some playful behaviour with the second Golden, which is new, as she used to just ignore other dogs until today. She also started to be a bit more mouthy today, biting in my hand and different objects with slight pressure. So far an “ouch” helped to make her let go.

Learning progress:
– Less fear around cars and people
– staying on her blanket works quite well now
– after reducing space in the indoor-kennel and adding a clock wrapped in my sock, she is making slight progress of not going nuts as much when put in the kennel. I still need to stay nearby though.
– She reacts well now to “Anna” and “come”

Picking up Anna and the First Day at Home

Yesterday was the big day. We drove down to Wilhermsdorf near Nürnberg to pick up our Anna. Upon arrival the breeder opened the door to the shed and eleven curious puppies all tried to climb up my hand. He picked out the girl with the purple color: “Here she is” he said and placed her in my arms. Oh my god, she is so cute!
We sat down in the living room with little Anna and her mother Nora running around in the room. Mr. Eberlein got out the contract, Anna’s pedigree and her vaccination card. We were also given a puppy starter set.

Eventually everyone said good bye to Anna before we started the long drive back home. I could see the realization in Anna’s face when we left the drive way and soon the trees were moving past the car window so very fast. She started to whinge and shake a little. Only about 5min later we stopped to let her go for a little walk and to calm down. Back in the car she whinged and cried again but soon fell asleep from exhaustion.
During the 5 hour drive, we stopped 3 times: Basically every time she became unsettled. This worked quite well, as she went to the toilet each time and was able to fall asleep in the car soon again.

Anna Golden Retriever Welpe

At home I first took her around the garden. She was very playful, picking up leaves and chasing me around in the garden. She already bonded well enough with me in the car that she would follow me wherever I went.
In the house I wanted her to settle in the kennel straight away but everything was still way too new. Eventually we let her walk freely in the house and she was very well behaved.
For dinner the littles misses got some cooked deer and carrot pieces which she gulped down within seconds.
At night I sat down next to her, until she fell asleep in her kennel. Then I snuck off to the sofa and slept in the living room with her.

Anna slept through until 3:30am, the only time I had to get up, to take her out. Unfortunately it was raining outside but she was kindly doing her business within seconds. Again she slept until 7am, before I had to take her out again.

For breakfast Anna enjoyed some quark with oats.

We spent the day discovering house and garden, listening to all sorts of sounds (dishes, dishwasher, coffee machine, oven, toilet flush, birds, wind, trees, dog barks, children playing, motor bikes and cars), getting to know five more people and even a two year old Labrador. We even went for a little walk to the nearby lake and Anna got to know that interesting new element: water!

Anna Golden Retriever Welpe

Back at home she even got to know a water hose by running right into it.

Learning progress: We did a few “Sit” and “Come” commands today and try to get her used to her name. She sometimes reacts to “Anna” now. The kennel training is still going slow, as she turns into a cry-baby as soon as she is left alone in it. Letting her cry and ignoring her only works if she is already very tired anyway. If I simply want her to rest for a little, it helps to stay near the kennel and let her fall asleep with my finger touching her paws, before sneaking off.

Anna is an angel.

Preparations

We had 4 weeks to prepare our home and ourselves for Anna’s arrival. While at first one might think a collar and lead are enough for a start, there’s a lot more to do.

At first we had to make sure that the fences around our garden are puppy-proof. In some parts we put down cobble stones along the bottom part of the fence and along one side of the garden, we attached some rabbit fence for now, until the fence will be renewed next year.

The next step was to buy a kennel. To some this may sound cruel but it’s a good solution to toilet-train a puppy in the first weeks and also to get her used to being separated from humans. This way we can make sure she won’t get hurt, chew on the furniture or release herself inside the house, while we are doing something else.
The kennel will be placed indoors in our living room. We decided to spray-paint the kennel in a dark red color to make it look more like a cosy home than a kennel (I guess Anna won’t care much, but I do haha).

Preparations before getting a Golden Retriever Puppy

I then ordered a few things from Amazon like “Die Retriever Schule für Welpen” (the retriever school for puppies), a book by Nora Zvolski, a puppy kong teething stick, a prey dummy that can be filled with treats, a dog whistle which is still clearly audible for humans and a handmade collar and leash from www.10000dogs.com. Additionally I got a 10 meter setline which is a long lead that can be used for hunting or training. We will get a third leash&collar for Anna, which will be an adjustable and robust leather leash for forest walks and bicycle rides. I also ordered two dog tags with her name, our address and phone number.

On a rainy Sunday mum and I sat down and sewed three blanket covers and a very ‘unique’ teddy bear – my first self-made stuffed toy. I would say it’s my last one too haha.

I know, I know, some of you are probably shaking their head at the pink and red accessories. Well… you know… I can be one of those tough mudders who like to get dirty and roam through the forests on rainy days but there are days where you gotta go to the city and look pretty. Anna will be my companion in the forests living a proper retriever life, but she’ll also get to know city life.

Back to the preparations: Food-wise we got a small packet of the breeder’s recommended puppy dry kibble and a few chewy bones. We will try and feed a mix of dry and fresh food, trying to avoid chemicals, wheat, corn or any byproducts. I read a lot about BARF (biologically appropriate raw food) during the last weeks to make sure we provide a wide variety of healthy food but we will cook certain things anyway.

Four weeks have passed and I can hardly believe the waiting has come to an end. I’m excited and even a little nervous about picking up Anna tomorrow and having to keep her calm for the long 5 hour drive back home.

Choosing the right Puppy – Different Types of Golden Retrievers

In the beginning of September we made the decision to get a new Golden Retriever puppy. Four years had passed since we lost our 14 year old Golden girl in 2008. At first we thought maybe it would be better to look for a different breed, so we wouldn’t have to be reminded of Nina too much. We had a look at other litters occasionally during the last years but eventually always ended up ogling at Golden Retriever puppies. We appreciate the characteristics of a Golden Retriever and always looked back at the wonderful times we had spent with Nina. Even though Nina wasn’t particularly bred for working, she was a freak when it came to retrieving, especially from water. She was a dedicated and fearless dog, jumping into frozen rivers, disappearing under waves in the ocean, or hunting for wild deer.
I started to look on the DRC (German Retriever Club) Website for current puppies but was in for a surprise when checking out the type of Goldens being bred. What I found were Goldens with short legs, sloppy backs, blocky heads, fur that almost reached the ground, heavy built and/or white Goldens.

It seems, as if a lot of people develop a taste for the light cream colors, short legs and blocky heads. For more info, check out the Retrieverman‘s or Briton Golden‘s post about the development of the breed.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure those Retrievers are also lovely natured dogs but I was personally looking for the slimmer, more agile type.

Lately I heard of retrievers who don’t like to retrieve or swim, which would be a rather dramatic change of character from what we have been used to. So I came to read about the Working Line Retrievers.
Working Retrievers have a lighter built, longer legs and are more agile. Most of the times they are a darker gold and their fur is a little shorter.

Now these Working Golden Retrievers also have a higher energy level and need to be kept busy with hunting and/or dummy training and if you don’t they are likely to find ways to occupy themselves by digging up the garden, or chewing your furniture.
Since I want to get into dummy training and also appreciate an agile dog, I tried to find a Working Retriever breeder in Germany. I found two that currently have puppies and who still have a puppy available, as often they have been promised months in advance.  Two calls later I sank in my chair. Both times the first question was: “What do you want to do with the puppy?” And when I explained that I don’t have a hunting license but I do want to do dummy training with her, the breeders didn’t want to sell their pup to me. Actually they were very unfriendly and I didn’t even feel like buying from a breeder like that.

Another week has passed and I found a website on which breeders advertised their pups. Eleven dark golden three-week old puppies were shown in the photo. The mother is a very dark Golden Retriever but no photo of the father yet. Location: Wilhermsdorf, near Nürnberg. I called my dad who was just on the 1500km way home from France and asked him whether he could have a look at the breeder, the puppies, the mother and the pedigree of the dogs. He wasn’t too impressed at the two hour delay but he went to have a look and take some more photos.
I really wanted to choose the pup myself but it’s a 5 hour drive one way, so dad had to do what he could.
He arrived home with photos of the three female Golden Retrievers, their pedigree and also a photo of the father.

Anna Golden Retriever

We knew they were perfect. While the mother, Ilona von Schmiedorf, looks like a working type golden, the father, Arthos vom Königshof is international champion in the show and, more importantly, looks like a healthy and agile Golden. All health tests have best results, HD-A (HD 0-0) and ED-0.
Now we just had to choose one of the three females. Actually they look pretty much identical but after some consideration we went for the puppy with the purple collar. Since this is the breeder’s first litter, we chose a name starting with an A: Anna.

The only four week old Anna will need to spend another four weeks with her litter mates and mother while we are preparing everything at home to welcome our new family member on the 13th of October.

Boy, am I excited!
